Latin
"Expel Greek and Latin from your schools and you confine the views of the existing generation to themselves and their immediate predecessors; you will cut off so many centuries of the world's experience..."
- Thomas Arnold
We believe that Latin is worth studying; not only does it train the mind in precision, logic, and beauty but Latin also opens a door to the great thinkers, poets, and saints of the Western Christian tradition. Through Latin, students learn to think more clearly, express ideas with precision, and encounter original texts - Scripture, Augustine, Cicero, Virgil, and more - with deeper understanding and delight.
We approach Latin with joyful rigor: not as a dry exercise, but as a rewarding pursuit that builds patience, attention, and the quiet satisfaction of mastery.
Over the next four years (Latin I through IV), students will progress steadily to reading significant ancient and medieval Latin works - such as Augustine’s Confessions, Virgil’s Aeneid, Caesar’s Gallic Wars, and Cicero’s speeches - in the original language with confidence and joy.
This Summer (July - August)
We will offer a Latin I Intensive on Thursday mornings, designed for new students who don't have a foundation in Latin and returning students who want to stay sharp. This focused summer course will bring students up to speed quickly so they can thrive in the fall when we begin Latin II.
Tuesday Classes
In order to register for the fall new students must either:
-
Already possess a solid grasp of Latin (through the third declension), or
-
Participate in the Latin I Intensive over the summer.
If you are unable to attend the Latin I Intensive and would still like to register your child next year please reach out as soon as possible so we can create a study plan that you will facilitate to ensure your child has the correct foundation.
